College Learning Outcomes:

  1. Written, Oral and Visual Communication: Communicate effectively in writing, orally and/or visually using traditional and/or modern information resources and supporting technology.
  2. Scientific and Quantitative Reasoning: Locate, identify, collect, and organize data in order to then analyze, interpret or evaluate it using mathematical skills and/or the scientific method.
  3. Critical Thinking: Differentiate between facts, influences, opinions, and assumptions to reach reasoned and supportable conclusions.
  4. Problem Solving: Recognize and identify the components of a problem or issue, look at it from multiple perspectives and investigate ways to resolve it.
  5. Information Literacy: Formulate strategies to locate, evaluate and apply information from a variety of sources - print and/or electronic.

NEXT: Look at what your discipline has written previously about Discipline specific SLOs. How do these compare to each of the general college learning outcomes above?

Program Review 2007:

Program Review 2009-2010:

Students in the Auto Collision Repair program will be able to
  • assess the damage a car sustained in a collision
  • solve the problem of repair using critical thinking skills.
Additionally, students will learn the proper way to
  • assess an automobile's paint
  • determine the best way to restore the paint to original or custom finish.

--- Automotive Technology Problem Solving and Critical Thinking SLO (from 2005) Where does this SLO fit in with the general ones?
In our discipline we teach students to approach solving problems by gathering data, considering theories, and identifying likely or appropriate repair procedures. We do this by using flow charts, analysis, consideration of proposed solutions, testing and conferring and consensus.

Program Review 2009-2010:

  • Students will be able to identify basic automotive components; be able to perform routine maintenance and have an understanding of basic tools, materials and methods. (See attached ATTS Level I)
  • Students will be able to perform repairs in the nine areas of the Automotive Repair Service Industry: Engines, Heating and Air Conditioning, Brakes, Suspension, Manual Transmisions/Transaxels, Automatic Transmisions/Transaxels, Electrical, Engine Performance and Emissions. (See attached ATTS Level III)
  • Students will be able to maintain their skills in the Automotive Repair Service Industry through updating their knowledge in rapidly advancing technologies used in automobiles today and in the future. (See BAR Mission Statement)
  • All Program Levels stress personal safety, environmental safety, craftsmanship and ethics.

Program Review 2009-2010:

Students in the Machine Metals program are provided with a well rounded theoretical background in the operation of 21st Century conventional and digitally controlled machine tools. They must apply this knowledge with hands-on operation of lathes, milling machines, grinding machines, and related industrial machine tools. They are trained on the use of precision hand tools, measuring instruments and the techniques of precision machining.
With this knowledge and skills base, they can then solve problems in a series of laboratory exercises which reflect industry based manipulative skill proficiencies.

--- Machine Metals/Welding Problem Solving and Critical Thinking SLO (from 2005) Where does this SLO fit in with the general ones?
In our department we teach students to approach solving problems by providing a well-rounded theoretical background in each particular discipline. We then apply this knowledge to laboratory exercises, which reflect industry-based manipulative skill proficiencies.
